The use of natural motifs such as this vine pattern are common in Indian block-printed fabrics. The block-printing process itself is a non-mechanised, labour intensive and highly skilled one. Firstly, a designer will expertly plan the layout of each piece, so whether it be a cushion cover or a large bedspread, the pattern on each item is complete in itself. Following the designer’s drawing, the village craftsman carves the intricate patterns into small blocks of hard-wearing teak wood, one block for each colour in the design. These blocks are then dipped into custom mixed trays of fresh dye and the pattern is then printed onto pure, soft, high quality cotton. To print a bedspread of 250 x 275cm the printers have to stamp approximately 1400 times with different blocks with as many as five or six colours. Following the block-printing process, garments are stitched on simple treadle sewing machines, then buttons and beads are added. We believe that the skill and attention to detail at every stage of production shows in the quality and beauty of each item.
