The distinctive paisley pattern derived its name from the Scottish town of Paisley, just west of Glasgow. It is said that Scottish soldiers serving in the British army in India would bring back wonderfully patterned Kashmiri shawls, which commonly feature the paisley motif, as gifts for wives and girlfriends. The town of Paisley was already renowned for its weaving industry, and soon they began producing their own local versions of these intricately patterned Indian shawls. Before this, the Paisley pattern had evolved in the east over thousands of years. Early floral motifs featured in Persian art, were adapted over time until in India in the 18th century it became the stylised teardrop shaped pattern we recognise today. The paisley pattern has a rich history and a timeless appeal and its undoubted vigour and vibrancy has the ability to brighten and enhance any room.
